it's 4:59. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. right now the bay area's first ever expressway lane is opening up to drivers. that means solo drivers can pay for the privilege of using what would otherwise be a carpool lang. jenelle wang is live over 680 in fremont. this has been in the works for a long, long time. >> yeah. and it's finally here. set to open in about 30 seconds from now officially. at 5 a.m. the bay area's first expressway lane. i'm along highway southbound 680. you can see the traffic going southbound right here. there will be three entry and three exit points. you're looking at one of the entry points here. washington boulevard exit. the new expressway lane replaces the carpool lane on southbound 680 between pleasanton and milpitas. a 14-mile stretch. it operates between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. monday through friday. carpoolers will be able to use the lane for free as well as motorcycles, transit buses and highway vehicles with valid stickers but solo drivers can use the lane with fair fas trak pass. only three entry and exit points and ille

on this thursday at 5:00. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. in the news this morning bulldozers will fan out through the san bruno neighborhood devastated by a natural gas explosion and fire. officials say it's time to begin removing the demolished homes. jenelle wang is live in san bruno with more on the story. >> cleanup crews will start coming in at 8:00 this morning to clean out all the debris at this disaster site. they're expected to be here the next four to six weeks. the first job to remove close to two dozen charred cars so they can get the heavy machinery in. then remove debris from the hot zones first. 34 homes to be cleared but could be more later. the cost is about 30 to $40,000 for each job site. for the victims that lost everything, still a lot of questions as the bills pile up. >> as far as insurance. >> what we all went through -- i don't know when that healing process starts to begin. we're still numb. >> as cleanup continues, water trucks will continue to water down the ash to reduce any toxic levels. the san jose county health department has brough

. theresa garcia is on the scene and will be joining us live with more on this breaking story in just a few minutes. we're also following developing news in san francisco where right now an intersection is closed as police investigate a nasty early morning accident that sent four people to the hospital. this happened at the intersection of chestnut. two cars collided and look at that, one of them flipped. all four people taken to the hospital are said to have serious injuries. no word on when that intersection will be open. frances will be keeping an eye on that. >> the latest on the deadly gas line explosion in san bruno. this morning officials plan to warn homeowners about fraudulent contractors who may try to scam those looking to rebuild. the city is putting a price tag so far on last week's disaster. private property sustained more than $31 million in damage. that includes 37 homes which were destroyed and another 19 which need major repairs. the disaster caused more than $6.5 million to public property including streets and sidewalks. the national transportation safety board expects t

, the calendar says summer is over but mother nature seems to be ignoring it. our anne makovec joins us now from walnut creek to explain that pg&e is urging conservation this morning. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. here in downtown walnut creek, it is hanging around the lower 60s. you can see from this live time and temperature behind me. it's going to get up to 102 here in walnut creek. that creates two issues. number one, it's a "spare the air" day and the possibility of power outages so many people are running their air- conditioning it could lead to overload. that's what happened in castro valley this weekend. more than 30,000 pg&e customers lost power for almost three hours on saturday night. pg&e says it was a heat-related equipment failure issue. the mere thought of not having ac can have us sweating. but this may make things easier on the power grid. shut your windows and keep blinds closed in the morning, right now, to keep cool air trapped in the home. try to remember to turn off lights and appliances either right now or before the sun comes up. do your best to use them

. anne makovec is at san quentin prison in marin county to tell us why. >> reporter: if the plan that was in effect on monday would have stuck, albert greenwood brown would be dead right now but he is alive behind me at san quentin this morning because of a decision by a federal judge last evening. brown would have been california's first execution in almost five years, but judge fogel suspended the execution until he finishes reviewing a lawsuit against california's lethal injection procedure. concerns that it's cruel and unusual punishment. if the first of three drugs administered doesn't work properly, the inmate could suffer extreme pain from the third drug which stops the heart. the family of brown's victim just wants it over with. here's her brother speaking about what it was like after his 15-year-old sister disappeared. >> i remember getting in the truck with my father and... the oil began to leak. the u.s. coast guard says it will resume its search later this morning for a woman that placed a may day call in the waters off the coast of tiburon. they conducted searches from the richmond san rafael bridge and to angel island but failed to locate the caller. officials also broadcast alerts to marine traffic in the area. >> it's now 5:05. investigators will resume their search for a fifth day this morning looking for a body that may have been dumbed at a pittsburgh landfill. they're focussed on a one-acre stretching hoping to find clues that led to the whereabouts of frederick salas. he may be the fifth victim in the string of murders all at the hands of valdemoro. police say so far the tedious search has yielded just one clue and it's not much. >> the only thing they have found is a piece of letterhead that had a hercules dress but it's not related to this case. >> investigators are searching in the right area where trash from hercules was dumped. possibly the same trash from the business park where valued marrow once worked and where the car he had was abandone

. the incident near hopper street us a can see here on the map as we zoom in to it for you. allen is live in petaluma tonight with more on salvage operation. really gone wrong. >> yes dan. out here at the marina some kayaker were complaining that they had to dodge huge tar ball earlier this morning but tonight most of that slick has either dissipated or evaporated. glob of oil floated out toward the bay at low tide around six this evening. the remnant of what petaluma resident say was large oil slick that stretched from shore to shore as it moved through this slew. 8:00 o'clock this morning the department of fish and game says this old tug boat being chopped up for scrap metal and leaked between 200 and 600 gallon of oil. the owner of the tug apparently knew it was leaking because he already had an oil boom around it. but the department of fish and game says this morning flood tide swept the oil out into the estuary creating oil slick 2 and a half miles long. resident say these are extremely sensitive wetlands. >> last week i saw couple river otters. usually it is a few shore birds

joins us from oakland to explain what happened. anne. >> reporter: well, looks like she got caught in some sort of crossfire. the 6-year-old girl was sleeping in her bedroom according to police when she ended up getting hit with a bullet in her upper arm. she is going to be okay. but she is at the hospital. it happened at this house here behind me on the 1600 block of seminary avenue south of international boulevard in oakland. several rounds were fired at this home at around 2:15. police believe by the number of gunshots that were fired, there was likely more than one shooter involved. no one has been arrested, unfortunately, police believe this could be a gang-related incident and apparently according to the people who live here, there was a -- some sort of incident involving a shooting here about a month ago. the shooter is unknown. she is the 6-year-old girl will be okay. >>> federal investigators are looking into the possibility of a link between a power failure and this month's explosion and fire in san bruno. the electric outage in milpitas affected pg&e's natural gas pipeli
